Fish Meal
Fishmeal is a product obtained by cooking, pressing, drying and grinding fresh raw fish or shellfish. Typical species are small fatty species like anchovy, sprat, herring and krill. Virtually, any fish or shellfish in the sea can be used to make fishmeal. Most of the world’s fishmeal is made from whole fish, and the pelagic species are the most utilised for this purpose. After the cooking and drying process, the fish is turned into a coarse brown flour. Fishmeal is an excellent source of protein , lipids (oils) i.e. long chain Omega-3’s, minerals, and vitamins, and highly digestible and palatable feed ingredient mainly used as feed for aquaculture species and livestock, sometimes used as a high-quality organic fertiliser. It carries large quantities of energy per unit weight. Most Fish Meal industry products are either produced from by-products of the fish processing industry or are derived from small, bony fishes that are not suitable for direct human consumption.
The balanced amino acid composition of fishmeal complements and provides synergistic effects with other animal and vegetable proteins in the diet to promote fast growth and reduce feeding costs.
The nutrients in fishmeal also aid in disease resistance by boosting and helping to maintain a healthy functional immune system. High-quality fishmeal also allows for formulation of nutrient-dense diets, which promote optimal growth
